Civics English Classes
Literacy Network periodically offers a Civics English program. In addition to improving basic English skills (written and oral), students will participate in classes and fieldtrips designed around the following 6 modules:
- Using the Library
- The Public School System
- Financial Systems
- Health Care Systems
- The Legal System
- Housing
Students will gain the English ability and awareness needed to become active, confident members of the Madison community. In order to increase their comfort within the community, students will accompany the instructor on fieldtrips directly related to each module. The class will go to places such as the capitol building, a fire station, a library, a public school, a bank and more.
In addition to classes, students will create individual Personal Education Plans with the instructor and meet monthly to discuss progress.
Depending on need, free childcare will be offered during classes.
- Requirements:
- Students must be 18 years of age or older
- Must be able to commit to 4-6 hours of class per week
- Must be willing to make a one year commitment to the program
- Minimum High Beginning English proficiency level recommended
Our First Experience in the Annual Literacy Network Run/Walk
- By: Rocio Rojas, Maricruz Alvidrez and Rolando Alvarez
Literacy Network is a non-profit organization who help people improving their literacy skills. The Run/Walk is a fundraising event where everyone can participate. The Run/Walk is important because the entry fees collected for this event directly support the year-round work of Literacy Network. Victor, Rocio, Rolando, Angelica, Fermin, Beth and Maricruz participate to support the Literacy Network Run/Walk. Victor helped with the food and the rest of us did the walk. Our kids love they have shirts similar to the adult and we love sharing this experience with our families and classmates.
